The front end of the propeller shaft is connected to the gearbox, which is bolted to the chassis or body of the car. The other end is connected to the final drive in the rear axle assembly.
When the car runs on an uneven surface, the rear axle assembly rises and falls as the springs flex, so the rotating propeller shaft must be able to change its angle correspondingly.

This swinging is made possible by universal joints which are fitted at each end of the propeller shaft. Axle movement on the springs continuously alters the distance between the gearbox and final drive couplings, so the effective length of the propeller shaft must be able to vary correspondingly.
This is allowed for by a sliding connection; usually the universal joint coupling is splined on to the gearbox output shaft so that it can slide in and out.
Front wheel drive cars and rear-engined rear wheel drive cars such as the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Ferrari 599 GTB, do not have propeller shafts; in these cars, power is transmitted from the final drive in the engine gearbox unit to the road wheels. The half shafts have universal joints, to allow for spring and steering movements, and splined connections to the final drive for changes in length.

As the axle rises and falls with the flexing of the springs, universal joints at each end of the propeller shaft allow its angle to change. The axle swings through an arc determined by the rear springs. The propeller shaft moves through a different arc and its effective length has to vary, to compensate for the difference. A sliding coupling at one end of the shaft makes this possible.

The cylinder head contains the valve mechanism, as well as the sparking plugs, the connection for the inlet – where the petrol/air mixture is fed into the cylinders via the inlet valves – and the exhaust. At one end of the cylinder block there is a hole for the end of the crankshaft.

In order to maintain a gas-tight fit in the cylinder, the piston is fitted with a number of springy iron piston rings, located in grooves cut in the piston.
